Wells is a proud Cathedral City hosting events throughout the year with plenty of opportunities to embrace your cultural side. Here at the White Hart Hotel, we’re fortunate to be situated less than five minutes’ walk from Wells Cathedral, Bishops Palace and Vicars Close, making it an ideal base while enjoying your stay in Wells.
Wells City Cathedral offers weekly stained glass walks and, on the 8th September, the Cathedral is hosting the Sixteen Concert by conductor Harry Christophers. This is sure to be an entertaining evening, with works covering the likes of Palestrina and Poulenc. Further events include embroidery talks and art exhibitions from a selection of Yvonne Harry’s work the week commencing 7th August. If you’re a fan of cars, the Best Western Country Tour Vintage Car Rally begins on the Cathedral Green Sunday 20th August.
Adjacent to Wells Cathedral, merely a stone’s throw from the White Hart Hotel, lies Bishops Palace. This elegant building offers 14 acres of gardens and a beautiful period house. This is home to the Bishops of the Diocese of Bath and Wells and has been for the past 800 years! If you’re a fan of verse, consider attending Poetry and Prose, an event focusing on history and garden literature on Friday 18th August. Do you have green fingers or do you intend to explore your hidden horticultural skills? Then why not visit the rare Plant Fair at Bishops Castle on the 20th August? A perfect opportunity to find rare and unusual plants from across the region. A must-see while in Wells is the open-air showing of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ on the 30th August in the grounds of Bishops Palace. Open to the elements, witness a timeless comedy in a beautiful setting.
Claiming to be one of the oldest residential streets in Britain is Bishops Close. Connected to Wells Cathedral and 650 years old, you’ll find what is unarguably the most complete Medieval Close in the country, which is a must-see if you’re in Wells. Enjoy our signature hospitality at the White Hart Hotel and you’ll have all of the above on your doorstep!
